- Understandng visual codes: Images which transmit there meanings through visual clues. eg. codes of expression (facial), gesture (body), clothing (what we and others think of ourselves), objects and backgorund-signs + symbols, codes of technique-photography (angle, quality, distance, lens, colour, action/posed)
- Taking pictures one after another forms a narrative-a sequince (police-evidence)
- Stories can be told through one image
- Film makers use storyboards-series ofpictures in an order to give the message + tell story.
- The news use pictures as people will only believe the story if they can see it as well as read it.
- Denotation Visual Description: Photos-dramatic, always there, can zoom, show proof
- Caption-what the picture is
- Selection-thousands are rejected and selceted by the editors
- Cropping cuts off parts of the image
- Advertising Images-editors and film makers influence the way people look at the pictures 'dream world'
- Looking at an image -where? when? who? society?
