The social group that my magazine is aimed at would be categorized as 'mainstreamers' and 'aspirers', as they seek status and like to keep up to date with the latest 'must have' products and fashion trends. They are a mainstream target audience as they like to follow the crowd and blend in.

Production: Double Page Spread

I added a picture to the side of the page. However, I feel that it looks out of place and is too dark. Therefore,  I shall not use this picture on the double page spread.

I enlarged the title to avoid blank spaces on the page. I also moved the interview upwards to use the space for sufficiently. 

Production: Fonts

To the left shows an image of possible fonts that I considered to use for the masthead on my front cover. The image to the right shows my final choice of font on the chosen image for my cover. As my title is 'PULSE', I decided to add an electronic symbol as it emphasises the title and connotes music. 

Production: Photo Editing

I edited the shadow out from underneath my models nose and side of her face. I did this by using the 'Retouch' tool. This makes it more aesthetically pleasing for the target audience and makes the picture look more professional.

The image to the left shows the new edited picture. I cropped out unnecessary background objects to avoid distractions whilst viewing the picture.

As my artist is a 'break through act', I am considering placing her on a background of broken glass to highlight this factor and make it the theme of the cover.

Because of the positioning of the beaming light within the background, I could cosinder flipping the image horizontally to connect the pulse symbol with the beam.

These two pictures show plugs within my cover. As the overall look and style of the cover is edgy and urban, I decided to change the solid, white looking rectangles into ripped pieces of paper. This is so that it fits in and suits the rest of the cover, as well as the genre of magazine.

Planning: Double Page Spread

My article within the double page spread will feature the female, breakthrough R&B artist , 'Chloe'. After being dropped from various record labels, she has now been signed by the worldwide label 'Roc Nation' and was found by Jay Z. Since joining the label, Chloe has achieved great success with two hit number one singles and is now a capable, competing, mainstream artist. After winning the public over, she plans to release a new album which shall be promoted within the double page spread. Therefore, the main focus of the feature is to inform the audience. 

The article will contain an interview with the breakthrough artist, expressing her low points of rejection, to her sudden success and reach to stardom. This will make the double page spread more personal to the artist, making Chloe easy to relate to by the viewer. Due to this, the audience would aspire to be like Chloe and admire her for not giving up and achieving her goals.

For my example of a free download I chose the song 'We Found Love' by Rihanna. After listening to a clip of the song, my focus groups thoughts were:

Image Analysis

This is in an image of the world-wide famous singer, Rihanna. If someone did not know this, they would figure it out by looking at the microphone which codes for music and singing. The picture shows her joining her fans in the crowd during a performance. If a historian from 2400 he/she would learn a lot about the society of our time. For example, they would learn that celebrity culture is idolised by the public. This can be seen from the fans excited facial expressions and body language. This factor has been encoded into the picture by all of the fans trying to touch and get close to Rihanna, symbolising that she is an icon. The cameras and phones also connotate the public are trying to get recordings or pictures of Rihanna. The historian would also learn the contrast between a celebrity life-style and normal life-style due to the opposite appearances. The eye is firstly attracted to Rihanna when looking at the picture as her appearence is striking and bold compared to everyone else in the picture. This is because she is in the public-eye and therefore has to have a statement look. This can be seen by her ironically wearing sunglasses whilst inside.

• Different audiences may interpret an image in different ways.
• Understandng visual codes: Images which transmit there meanings through visual clues. eg. codes of expression (facial), gesture (body), clothing (what we and others think of ourselves), objects and backgorund-signs + symbols, codes of technique-photography (angle, quality, distance, lens, colour, action/posed)
• Taking pictures one after another forms a narrative-a sequince (police-evidence)
• Stories can be told through one image
• Film makers use storyboards-series ofpictures in an order to give the message + tell story.
• The news use pictures as people will only believe the story if they can see it as well as read it.
• Denotation Visual Description: Photos-dramatic, always there, can zoom, show proof
• Caption-what the picture is
• Selection-thousands are rejected and selceted by the editors
• Cropping cuts off parts of the image 
• Advertising Images-editors and film makers influence the way people look at the pictures 'dream world'
• Looking at an image -where? when? who? society?

School Shots Task

This is an exterior shot of at the front of the school. It represents the school in a positive light as it shows  how well the area is looked after and therefore connotes cleanliness within the school and gives a good first impression for passers by. Positivity is also gained due to the sunny weather within the picture which uplifts the overall atmosphere.

 

This shot shows old chewing gum stuck to the bottom of a table in the canteen. The picture represents the school in a bad way as it has an ironically opposite message compared to the first image. This is because it encodes the idea of lack of hygiene within the school and disrespect from students.

My third shot is an image of a pupils earring which is in the shape of a cross. It could be interpreted in a variety of  different ways. For example, as it is an accessory it denotes a piece of jewellery and could therefore be just a fashion statement, however the image could connotate religious beliefs of either the student or school as a whole. This photo is therefore polysemic.

This image anchors my third shot as it shows a possible interpretation of the earring acting as a religious symbol. This can be seen by a pupil of the school holding the iconic sign which is the Bible. Molly is using direct mode of address which is effective as it catches the audiences attention.

My penultimate shot is a mid shot which evokes a mood of boredom. This can be seen by the body language of the students, for example their head in their palms and tired looking facial expressions.

My final shot shows the opposite of the previous image as the body language and facial expressions of Molly and Crystalle now connote positivity and happiness. The picture is effective as it may be interpreted as ironic that pupils of the school are excited and loud in a library.
